Saint-Petersburg State University

The Saint-Petersburg State University was founded in 1724 by Peter the Great within the system of education and science that he supposed to apply in Russia. The University was an association of the Academy of Science, a college and a high school.

Among the first professors of the University there were famous scientists: Eiler, Bernulli, Bayer. The first rector of the University since 1747 had been a famous historian Miller. In 1758—1765 the University was headed by Lomonosov — Russian scientist.

Many scientists and social figures graduated from the University and than became professors and members of the Academy of Science. The first Russian textbooks were written by those people.

During the second half of the 19th century many science schools were born in the University: in mathematics by Chebishev, in chemistry — by Butlerov, in biology — by Beketov, Mechnokov, Kovalevski, Sechenov and many many others. It is not possible to mention all of them, just visit the main passage of the University and go along the bookshelves, portraits, statues of the people who became a world-famous scientists and teachers, political figures, poets, painters.
